Why I stopped using Google and switched to DuckDuckGo

Google, Bing and other search engine make a search "bubble", and only give you results in line with sites you already visited. This reduces the chance of finding interesting sites and narrows your view of the world wide web to a bubble: Escape your search engine Filter Bubble!

Google used to have a motto "don't be evil", that was a long time ago. Unless privacy is evil in Google's world. Don't wanna be tracked?

Rooting the Motorola Milestone and flashing custom ROM

There are a lot of guides, how-tos, blog and forum posts about rooting and flashing Android phones. I decided to add this post to that pile, because it still took me some time to find the really relevant info, especially since I had already updated to Android 2.2 and I am using a Linux machine. Hope this helps some people and doesn't just make it more confusing or harder to find the relevant info.

Green hosting

This website and all other websites I make are hosted at Greenhost, a Dutch hosting provider that is 100% climate neutral. They use the newest, greenest servers and put them at Evoswitch the most durable data center of the Benelux.

Where is my Android 2.2 update?

My Motorola Milestone is still stuck with Android 2.1, even though the US version, the Droid got the 2.2 update months ago and that update was promised for Milestone in Europe an equally long time ago.

The main improvements in 2.2 are installing apps to SD in stead of internal memory, something I desperately need, since I am getting the "Low on space" warning and there aren't any apps I can or want to remove.

Encrypting e-mails

Using Thunderbird and Enigmail, it is not too hard to encrypt the mails you send (and decrypt those you receive). There is a quick-start guide at to help you get, well, started.

So when sending me mails, please feel free to encrypt them using this key:
You can also use this key to verify is a signed e-mail from me, really was signed by me.

Taking back control of your data

I won't be deleting my Facebook profile for now, but I'm glad I'm on Diaspora and Friendika to. These alternatives to Facebook aren't there yet in terms of functionality, but it's good to have distributed, open source alternatives. There are a lot of reasons to find Facebook evil, but the most important to me are that it is a big corporation that has all your info and can do with it as it pleases. They can delete your profile in a whim or decide to give your info to whatever government that thinks it could use it. The same can be said of Google, Twitter, etc.

Accepting Bitcoin

For future work I will be accepting Bitcoin payments. If you don't know Bitcoin, be sure to check it out, I think it is awesome and will become as important as PayPal in the near future.

Bitcoin accepted here

edit: Unfortunatly doesn't exist any more, it was a Bitcoin version of Flattr and where I bought and used my first Bitcoins.

Why Drupal is better then Joomla

As you probably know in the land of Open Source Content Management Systems (or CMS) there is a lot of choice, but the two main players are Drupal and Joomla. When first choosing a CMS, it can be difficult to know which of these two (or the many others) to choose.
